Mark Twain Elementary
From CJC Architects
| Mark Twain is a new, single story elementary school serving a program for four year-olds through fifth grade that also functions as a community center and clinic. The structure was built on the existing site while the old school remained in operation. The new school is 67,000 square feet including four, eight classroom wings, central media center, administration area, gymnasium with stage, art and music classrooms, cafeteria and full kitchen. Community social services and faculty daycare are also provided on site. The 1923 cut stone entry facade was removed from the old building and used on the new school entry to help soften the impact on the community for demolishing the old building. The old school building was removed to provide space for storm water management and playgrounds.
Building construction is slab on grade, with combination pre-engineered metal building systems in the gymnasium and classroom areas, and structural steel in the administration, cafeteria and media center areas. The exterior is brick with steel stud walls, aluminum windows, standing seam metal and built-up roofing. Each classroom has individual HVAC units, with roof top units serving the remainder of the building. | ||
